Stark Center Project at the University of Texas

Client: University of Texas at Austin

This is a conference table and podium designed and made for the recently opened Stark Center for Physical Culture at the University of Texas. The Stark Center was funded in part through the Stark Foundation, originally endowed by the Stark family of Orange, Texas.

The Stark family made its fortune logging longleaf pine along the Sabine River in the latter half of the 19th and early years of the 20th centuries. The table and podium were both created using reclaimed longleaf pine, with some of the material coming from a sinker log pulled from the Sabine River.

The raised panels in the table's pedestals and the oval inlay in the top were made with curly pine acquired from shiplap siding taken from one of the old Stark mansions in Orange. Table and podium were both built to accommodate wiring, data cables, and remote devices.

No particleboard, no thin veneers, just solid wood throughout.
