Elegance By Design
The Pixel System is a new instrument from Silicon Valley bio-tech start-up Cellular Research (CRI). It is a standalone detection platform for direct mRNA quantitation from single cells and rare samples. The system utilizes Molecular Indexing™ in a simple, fast and inexpensive format. Molecular Indexing™ is a revolutionary technology that enables direct and precise counting of individual molecules, genes, chromosomes and other genetic materials in very small samples and individual cells. This is accomplished using a proprietary optical imaging system that consists of an LED light source, a digital camera and a computer controlled X-Y positional stage.
IDE had an established relationship with CRI’s Marketing Director, Martin Pieprzyk that began while Mr. Pieprzyk was a Marketing Director at Fluidigm Corporation for whom IDE designed the award winning Fluidigm C1 Single Cell Auto Prep System. Based on this successful relationship, IDE was retained to develop a unique head-turning industrial design for Cellular’s new Pixel System. IDE was also tasked with providing all mechanical design and engineering and system engineering, less optical design.
An Iconic New Form
CRI was looking for an iconic new form for the design of their “first of its kind” bench top instrument. IDE’s industrial design team created several uniquely dramatic concepts which were pared down to the final sculptural form through several rounds of refinement. The final solution provides an elegant user interface by accentuating the two interaction zones with form and color. The finished design evokes the elegant structure of a floral vase, specifically an organic structure that is both enticing and functional, encouraging user interaction. Bright hues with contrasting smooth gloss and fine textured satin finishes were chosen to emphasize the sinuous form.
A particular challenge for the design team was how to cover the opening for the motorized stage that holds the sampl
