About Us

Sam Hecht and Kim Colin formed design studio Industrial Facility in 2002 to explore the junction between product and space. Industrial design is about the object in relation to its landscape, spatially, culturally and performatively. It is the practice of understanding and often creating a context of use and meaning.

International clients are from a variety of sectors including telecommunications, electronics, consumer products, cultural institutions, transportation and fashion.

Industrial Facility has a point of view that lends clarity to each design solution; its strength lies in identifying and addressing questions that might be simultaneously particular, technical and conceptual. Each project at Industrial Facility integrates with what is already familiar and instigates what we have yet to know.

We involve a rigorous analysis of the ideas that take shape, their application and their implementation.

The work has been widely published and has featured in several exhibitions - for the British Council, The Design Museum, The Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, and at Maison Objét in Paris - and is included in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art and the Centre Pompidou. The work has won more than 40 awards in Europe and America, including 3 IF Gold awards.

Previously, Sam Hecht was Head of Industrial Design at IDEO, where, over a course of 10 years, was part of the San Francisco, Tokyo and London Studios.

Kim Colin is from Los Angeles where she received a MArch in architecture at SCI-Arc. She has taught architectural design at the Royal College of Art in London since 1999.
