About Us

OBRA Architects was founded by Pablo Castro and Jennifer Lee in the year 2000 in New York City. OBRA’s work spans a wide range of projects that consistently seek invention through the exploration of material, structure, site and experience. Their practice and their work seek to challenge and expand the range of metaphors in which architecture finds its meaning. OBRA considers each and every project to be intimately bound to its surroundings, extending afield into site and landscape the conceptual understanding of the architectural work. As a result many of our proposals and built works include outdoor components and integration into the natural or urban landscape.

The work of OBRA has been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art, PS1 Contemporary Art Center, Rhode Island School of Design, the Chicago Athenaeum, as well as at the University of Minnesota College of Design, Fordham University’s Center Gallery, and the Center for Architecture, New York. OBRA Architects was named one of 2005 Emerging Voices by the Architectural League of New York, the winner of the 2006 PS1/MoMA Young Architects Program competition, and their work has been honored with an AIA New York Honor Award, two American Architecture Awards by the Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design and a 2008 I.D. Annual Design Review Award of Design Distinction. OBRA was invited to participate in MoMA’s Conversations with Contemporary Artists series in February of 2007. The work of OBRA has been featured in A+U, Summa+, Architecture, Architectural Record, The New York Times, The International Herald Tribune, Concept Magazine (Seoul), and Il Giornale Dell’Architettura. Their second monograph is in progress and will be published by DAMDI Press in Seoul, Korea later this year.
