The Erikoodu Briquettes were designed and are manufactured in a rural area of Tamil Nadu—providing much needed employment to the local community. Additionally, the briquettes, made from sustainably harvested and locally produced charcoal, do not release any smoke while burning. This direct benefit reduces serious health issues for families that switch from wood fuel. Design Impact worked with ODAM to develop a business model and product that prevents respiratory illness, appeals to users, and raises the standard of living for those who produce it. The briquettes are currently being produced for a test market to assess the ability to scale production and distribution.
