About Us
Michael Bom creates sculptural lamps from books and paper in his studio in Rotterdam, The Netherlands.
These lamps display his ability to create poetic yet beautiful functional objects. His designs have adorned many interior projects worldwide. These illuminated objects have added an unique artistic aspect to the lighting of these interiors.
Michael Bom was born and grew up in Cape Town, South Africa. He started out his career as a graphic designer in Rotterdam, Holland. With his love for books, paper and typography he discovered ways of transforming books and other printed materials into playful and fascinating objects.
Michael Bom began creating his booklamps already in 2004 and over the years he has added new designs to his collection; each one possessing a strong sculptural quality. Increasingly, the forms of Michael Bom's lights become less rigid and more organic.
His divers output, next to that of his Booklamp series, includes birdhouses and chairs made out of typographic billboards and also a pencilholder made from vinyl records.
The books that Bom chooses for his designs are as he says waiting to have new life blown into them. Some books have so much beauty in them, they might have lost their current function but certainly have the potential for a new one.
Bom finds it challenging to implement the qualities of the old material and to carry and accentuate the beauty thereof in his new designs. He tries to achieve a balance between the used material and the new product.
These Atlas Book Lamps adorn restaurants in Barcelona and Madrid and also hotels in Spain and Germany. He has worked on projects creating new lamps for clients in Holland and Austria.
Michael Bom’s booklamps have been published in numerous magazines such as Architectural Digest, Wallpaper, Elle, Home and Garden, Glamour, and many more.
His work has been exhibited in exhibitions e.g. Colette (Paris), European Environmental Design Award (Madrid), Vrom Utrecht, Central Library Rotterdam
