It’s no surprise that LEDs have become the standard for indicating statuses on consumer electronics – they’re small, bright, flexible and inexpensive. Using brightness, hue, and animation, LEDs can communicate a surprising level of information when thoughtfully considered.
At Pushstart, we’re perpetually striving to identify the best tools that enable us to effectively design good user experiences. Time and again we’ve been frustrated by the lack of designer friendly LED prototyping options.
We partnered with Austin-based electrical engineering firm Scalar Electronics to design and develop Lumioto, a device that streamlines the design process. With Lumioto, we now have a simple and affordable way to model LED behavior. Eliminating the need for bespoke electronics design for early-stage mockups, we can quickly and efficiently iterate, saving our clients time and money.
We consulted with Scalar to identify the feature set that would best serve product designers like ourselves. After deciding to power Lumioto with Arduino, an invaluable tool in many product designers’ arsenal, Scalar set out to design electronics while we worked on branding this odd little gadget.
After making and testing a initial run of Lumiotos, our friends at Scalar are seeking funding for higher volume production through Kickstarter. Check out the campaign and see what Lumioto can do!
