About Us

IDEO helps organizations innovate. We design products, services, environments, media, and interactions. Independently ranked by global business leaders as one of the world's most innovative companies, we aim to create positive outcomes for people and organizations.

IDEO has contributed to the development of many well-known innovations, including the first mouse for Apple and the world’s first laptop computer. Other projects include the Handspring Treo, Bank of America's "Keep the Change" service, Shimano's Coasting bikes, and interior configurations for Eclipse Aviation's Very Light Jet.

More than 500 employees call IDEO home in eight different cities: Palo Alto, San Francisco, Chicago, Boston, New York City, London, Munich, and Shanghai. We work together in multidisciplinary teams of designers, engineers, social scientists, and business strategists. IDEO’s culture and process of innovation has attracted the attention of academics, companies, and journalists worldwide.

In 1999, ABC’s Nightline dedicated an entire episode to our process for innovation as we redesigned a shopping cart in four days. In 2001, general manager Tom Kelley wrote the best-selling business book, "The Art of Innovation," and in 2005, "The Ten Faces of Innovation." Cofounder and chairman David Kelley is a founder of Stanford's "d.school." More recently, cofounder Bill Moggridge published "Designing Interactions" (2006); and CEO and President Tim Brown has participated in the World Economic Forum at Davos since 2006.
